Mick Inkpen has written a charming and funny story here that introduces young children to counting and the concept of money. A little boy enters a pet shop where a great big sale sees a myriad of animals being sold for mere pence. The boy is joined by a persistent rat who declares that the boy’s pocket money should be spent on him. The rat is a funny character, and coupled with Inkpen’s distinctively warm illustrations, this is a feel-good book with a feel-good ending.
