Parents beware for this book delivers a harsh stop-and-take-notice moral for mums and dads. Bernard seeks out each of his parents in turn, seeking their attention, but he is continually ignored by the self-absorbed duo. When he warns of a monster in the garden, Bernard’s mother fails to heed the warning. Even as the monster devours Bernard and takes his place in the house, both parents are too preoccupied to notice that their son is in fact a monster. A classic story that on the face of it appears to be a simple one, with repetition throughout, but the underlying message is one worth heeding (unless you want your little darling to turn into a monster!).
