Parents beware of a book that delivers a harsh stop-and-take-notice moral. Bernard seeks out each of his parents in turn to gain their attention, but he is continually ignored by the self-absorbed duo. When he warns of a monster in the garden, Bernard’s mother fails to heed the threat. Even as the monster devours Bernard and takes his place in the house, both parents are too preoccupied to notice that their son is in fact a monster. A classic story that on the face of it appears to be simple, with repetition throughout. Yet the underlying message is a serious one worth heeding (unless you want your child to turn into a monster for real!).
